Intervista:

1) Da dove prendi l'ispirazione per scrivere i tuoi romanzi?
Inspiration can come from a hundred different sources. Sometimes I'll overhear a snippet of conversation. (My book AFTER MIDNIGHT came from a single line of dialogue--"Our sister is marrying a vampire.") Or I may watch a movie or read a book and think, "Well, I would have done it THAT way!" Reading a wonderful romance always makes me want to write one. I think the most consistent inspiration for me is probably music, especially once I get into a book. Every book I've written has a "soundtrack" that I play over and over while I'm writing. For the book I just finished, it was the orchestral soundtrack from the movie SHREK.
L'ispirazione può venire da un centinaio di fonti diverse. A volte ascolto un frammento di conversazione. (Il mio libro DOPO MEZZANOTTE prendeva ispirazione da una sola riga di dialogo - "Nostra sorella sta per sposare un vampiro." Capita che io possa guardare un film o leggere un libro e pensare: "Bene, mi hanno fatto in questo modo!" Leggere un meraviglioso romance, mi fa venir voglia di scrivere uno. Penso che l'ispirazione più coerente per me è probabilmente la musica, specialmente quando inizio un nuovo libro. Ogni libro che ho scritto è una "colonna sonora" che ascolto e riascolto mentre scrivo. Per il libro che ho appena terminato, la colonna sonora orchestrale è tratta dal film Shrek.

2) Ti rivedi in una o più eroine delle tue storie?
I'd say that Lottie from ONE NIGHT OF SCANDAL is the most like me. She's a writer and she's very nosy and she has an insatiable appetite for sweets and kittens.
Direi che Lottie dal libro "Una notte da scandalo" sia la più simile a me. Lei è uno scrittrice ed è molto curiosa e ha un appetito insaziabile per le caramelle.

3) Preferisci scrivere romanzi storici o contemporanei?
I really enjoyed doing the contemporary scenes in my time-travel novel BREATH OF MAGIC because they felt fresh and different to me but I think historicals will always have my heart. I love the "sweep-you-away" fantasy of the historical because we all need a mental vacation from this world just to stay sane. Your heroes can also be a little more dangerous and politically incorrect in the historical, which is a lot of fun to write. If a contemporary hero stuffs you into his Corvette and whisks you away to his condo, you'd have to file a restraining order and have him arrested for stalking. But a Regency or medieval hero can still drag you astride his horse and whisk you away to his mansion/castle :)
Mi ha davvero divertita scrivere scene contemporanee nel mio romanzo time-travel "BREATH OF MAGIC" perchè erano nuove e diverse per me, ma penso che i romanzi storici rimarranno sempre nel mio cuore. Adoro la fantasia dei romanzi storici perchè ti fanno viaggiare e penso che tutti noi abbiamo bisogno di una vacanza "mentale" lontana da questo mondo proprio per rimanere sani. Inoltre gli eroi dei romanzi storici possono essere un pò più pericolosi e politicamente scorretti il che rende il tutto più divertente da scrivere. Se un eroe contemporaneo ad esempio ti rapisce con la sua corvette e ti porta via, dovresti denunciarlo e farlo arrestare. Ma un eroe medievale o regency può comunque rapirti sul suo cavallo e portarti al suo palazzo/castello.

4) Hai mai preso ispirazione da fatti realmente accaduti per le storie dei tuoi romanzi?
ONE NIGHT OF SCANDAL was a very personal book for me to write because Hayden's first wife suffered from bipolar disorder (manic-depression) and so does my mother. When I was writing the scene where Hayden tells his little girl that it wasn't her fault that her mommy was sick, I ended up with tears streaming down my own face.
"Una notte di scandalo" è stato un libro molto personale per me da scrivere, perchè la prima moglie di Hayden era affetta da disturbo bipolare (maniaco-depressiva) esattamente come mia madre. Quando scrissi la scena in cui Hayden dice alla sua piccola ragazza che non era lei la responsabile della malattia di sua madre, mi ritrovai con le lacrime che scorrevano sul mio viso.

5) Quando scrivi un libro, qual'è il momento in cui decidi il titolo?
I had the titles for SOME LIKE IT WICKED (August 2008) and SOME LIKE IT WILD (April 2009) before I even started the books. I love it when that happens! Sometimes they just spring right off your tongue and other times you don't know what the title will be until you finish the book.
Avevo titoli come "Some like it Wicked" (agosto 2008) e "Some Like it wild" (aprile 2009) prima ancora che iniziassi a scrivere i libri, adoro quando questo succede! Qualche volta i titoli nascono spontanei, mentre altre volte non sai quale sarà il titolo finale fino a che il libro non è terminato.

6) Hai mai scritto o hai mai pensato di scrivere qualcosa di diverso dai romanzi?
I believe so strongly in the romance genre that I can't imagine writing anything that didn't have a romance of some sort in it. I love books that bring the genres together like Stephenie Meyer's TWILIGHT series. It's marketed as Young Adult and it's a vampire story but it's also one of the most classic romances I've read in a long time. I can definitely imagine writing something like that.
Credo così tanto nel genere romance che non potrei mai immaginare di scrivere qualcosa che non tratti argomenti romantici. Adoro il libri che uniscono generi differenti come la serie "TWILIGHT" di Stephenie Meyer. E' commercializzato per i ragazzi ed è una storia di vampiri ma è a tempo stesso uno dei più classici romance che non mi capitava da tempo di leggere. Mi piacerebbe decisamente poter scrivere una cosa simile.

7) Qual'è il miglior momento della giornata per scrivere?
I'm a morning person so it's important for me to get to my computer early but I've noticed that I putter a lot during that time--re-reading what I wrote the day before, etc. Usually early afternoon is a very productive time for me and I may end up doing 85% of my writing from 1-3 PM..
Sono una persona mattiniera così è molto importante per me mettermi al lavoro sul mio computer molto presto, ma devo dire che passo molto tempo a rileggere ciò che ho scritto il giorno prima. Di solito il primo pomeriggio è un momento della giornata molto produttivo per me, dalle 13 alle 15 posso completare l'85% del mio lavoro.

8) Quale personaggio maschile o femminile dei tuoi libri preferisci?
I can't choose! That's like asking me to pick my favorite child! :) I am partial to Billy Darling from NOBODY'S DARLING, Sebastian Kerr from HEATHER AND VELVET, Gerard Claremont from THIEF OF HEARTS, Gabrial Fairchild from YOURS UNTIL DAWN and Simon Wescott, the hero of SOME LIKE IT WICKED (which will be released in the states in August 2008). I tend to like my heroes with a naughty streak the best ;) .
Non posso scegliere! Sarebbe come se tu mi chiedessi di scegliere il mio figlio preferito! :) Ho un debole per Billy Darling di "NOBODY'S DARLING", Sebastian Kerr di HEATHER AND VELVET, Gerard Claremont di THIEF OF HEARTS, Gabrial Fairchild from YOURS UNTIL DAWN e Simon Wescott, l'eroe di SOME LIKE IT WICKED (che è stato pubblicato negli Stati Uniti in agosto 2008). Tendenzialmente gli eroi che mi piacciono di più sono quelli con una vena monella.

9) Data la tendenza di alcune scrittrici a scrivere racconti paranormali (vampiri, licantropi, ecc..), ti piacerebbe accostarti a questo genere?
I've written four paranormals already--BREATH OF MAGIC and TOUCH OF ENCHANTMENT was about time-traveling witches and AFTER MIDNIGHT and THE VAMPIRE WHO LOVED ME is about two brothers--a vampire hunter and a vampire. I think the readers who enjoy my historicals would like them just as much because they're really not any different at all. The paranormal elements are woven right into the classic historical romance.
Ho già scritto 4 romanzi paranormali, BREATH OF MAGIC e TOUCH OF ENCHANTMENT parlano di streghe che viaggiano nel tempo; AFTER MIDNIGHT e THE VAMPIRE WHO LOVED parlano di due fratelli, uno di loro vampiro e l'altro cacciatore di vampiri. Penso che i lettori cui sono piaciuti i miei romanzi storici adoreranno questi altrettanto, perchè in fondo non sono tanto differenti. Gli elementi paranormali sono intrecciati alla trama di un classico romanzo storico.

10) Puoi darci qualche anticipazione sul tuo prossimo libro?
I've got SOME LIKE IT WICKED coming out in the states in August. My heroine, Catriona Kincaid, goes looking for a hero but finds a man. Sir Simon Wescott is languishing in Newgate Prison when she asks him to escort her to the Highlands to help her find her missing brother and restore the honor of the clan. She offers him both wealth and freedom but Simon has a more sensual prize in mind ;) I just finished writing SOME LIKE IT WILD, the sequel to SOME LIKE IT WICKED, which will be out in April 2009 in the states. It tells the story of Catriona's brother, Connor Kincaid, a wild Highlander and dangerous highwayman.
"Some like it wicked" uscirà negli stati uniti ad agosto. La mia eroina, Catriona Kincaid, va in cerca di un eroe ma alla fine trova un uomo. Sir Simon Wescott si sta struggendo nella prigione di Prison quando lei gli chiede di scortarla nelle Highlands per aiutarla a trovare suo fratello scomparso e ripristinare quindi l'onore della famiglia. Lei offre a lui ricchezza e libertà ma Simon ha una ricompensa più sensuale nella sua mente ;) Ho appena finito di scrivere "Some like it Wild", il seguito di "Some like it wicked" che uscirà negli stati uniti in aprile 2009. Parla della storia del fratello di Catriona, Connor Kincaid, un selvaggio delle Highlands e pericoloso brigante.

Un'ultima cosa scriveresti una piccola dedica a tutte le tue lettrici italiane?
"Being published in the most romantic language in the world has been a dream come true for me! I can't tell you how much I appreciate all of your support and the wonderful e-mails you've sent me. Your warmth and enthusiasm are an inspiration that will keep me writing for years to come. God bless you all!
L'essere stata pubblicata in una delle lingue più romantiche del mondo è per me un sogno che è diventato realtà!
