Intervista:

1) Da dove prendi l'ispirazione per scrivere i tuoi romanzi?
It is dependent really upon each story. One story I wrote was inspired by a song I heard on the radio. Others have been inspired by events in history or by a particular character in history. The one I am writing now is inspired by two things; by certain things I have experienced myself and by my love of Italy, which is now my second home.
Dipende da ogni singola storia. Un racconto che ho scritto è nato da una canzone che ho sentito alla radio. Altri sono stati ispirati da eventi storici o da particolari personaggi storici. Quello che sto scrivendo ora è stato ispirato da due cose; in parte da alcune mie esperienze personali, altre dal mio amore per l'Italia, che ora è la mia seconda casa.

2) Ti rivedi in una o più eroine delle tue storie?
Usually there are small characteristics of myself that come through in each of my heroines. It is difficult to truly write someone without being able to connect with them. However, the character I am writing now is probably most connected to me.
Solitamente ci sono mie piccole caratteristiche in ognuna delle mie eroine. E' davvero difficile scrivere di qualcuno senza metterci un pezzettino di me stessa. Tuttavia il personaggio di cui sto scrivendo ora è probabilmente quello che più mi assomiglia.

3) Preferisci scrivere romanzi storici o contemporanei?
I love both types of writing for different reasons. I love history very much so it is natural for me to write in different times and places. I am fascinated by how people lived centuries ago and how history has created the world we live in today. I also enjoy writing stories that could very easily take place in today's world where my character (and I hope my reader) can imagine and perhaps visit and even live in the world I created in the story.
Mi piacciono entrambe le tipologie per diverse ragioni. Mi piace molto la storia così mi viene spontaneo scrivere in differenti periodi e ambientazioni. Sono affascinata di come la gente ha vissuto nei secoli passati, e di come la storia ha creato il mondo in cui viviamo oggi. Mi diverte molto scrivere anche racconti che possono essere ambientati nel mondo di oggi, che il mio personaggio (e spero anche il mio lettore) può immaginare e forse visitare e probabilmente anche vivere nell'ambientazione creata nel racconto.

4) Hai mai preso ispirazione da fatti realmente accaduti per le storie dei tuoi romanzi?
Certainly. So many fascinating things have occurred in history that it is impossible for me not to be inspired by them. Also, in my own life or even the lives of people I know, things have happened (tragedies, difficulties, triumphs) that inspire me to write a story of overcoming and celebrating these things.
Sicuramente. Sono capitati così tanti avvenimenti affascinanti nel passato che è impossibile per me non prendere ispirazione da questi. Anche gli avvenimenti accaduta nella mia stessa vita o in quella delle persone che conosco (tragedie, difficoltà, successi) mi hanno ispirato a scrivere racconti che celebrassero queste cose.

5) Quando scrivi un libro, qual'è il momento in cui decidi il titolo?
It is usually at least halfway through the book before a title might begin to come to me. In the beginning, the story and the characters are too new. I need a deeper connection to the story before I can title it.
Generalmente capita almeno verso metà del libro. All'inizio sia la storia che i personaggi sono troppo nuovi. Ho bisogno di un contatto più profondo con il mio racconto, prima che possa decidere un titolo.

6) Hai mai scritto o hai mai pensato di scrivere qualcosa di diverso dai romanzi?
Yes. I am a big fan of mysteries and also I travel often and enjoy reading travelogues (non-fiction), I would be interested in both genres one day.
Certo. Sono una grande fan dei misteri, inoltre viaggiando spesso mi piace leggere diari di viaggio (non-fictions); sarei interessata ad entrambi i generi un giorno.

7) Qual'è il miglior momento della giornata per scrivere?
For me, best is at night. I have children and so mornings are busy with their lives. They are in school during the day and I work then but there is the phone and other daily interruptions. I like the quiet of night time and also find it is a less distracting time (without phone calls, errands, etc.)
Per me, il meglio è durante la notte. Ho dei figli, quindi le giornate sono davvero piene. Durante il giorno sono a scuola così provo a lavorare ma ci sono molte interruzioni, come il telefono che suona. Adoro il silenzio notturno, e ci sono meno distrazioni (niente telefonate, commissioni, ecc.)

8) Quale personaggio maschile o femminile dei tuoi libri preferisci?
Oh, I like them all but some are a little closer to me than others, I must admit. I wrote a contemporary novel called THE SECOND CHANCE (in English) and the heroine, Flora, is particularly close to my heart. And from my book, STEALING HEAVEN (in English)/L'OSPITE MISTERIOSA (in Italian) I could not help but fall in love with Dante, the hero.
Oh, mi piacciono davvero tutti ma devo ammettere che alcuni mi somigliano di più di altri. Ho scritto un romanzo contemporaneo intitolato "THE SECOND CHANCE" (LA SECONDA OCCASIONE) e l'eroina, Flora, è particolarmente nel mio cuore. E dal mio libro "STEALING HEAVEN" (titolo originale)/"L'OSPITE MISTERIOSA" (titolo in italiano) mi sono davvero innamorata di Dante, l'eroe.

9) Data la tendenza di alcune scrittrici a scrivere racconti paranormali (vampiri, licantropi, ecc..), ti piacerebbe accostarti a questo genere?
I did write one contemporary story (SPELLSTRUCK - English) that was about a modern day single mother who is also a witch. I set the story here in my US home of New England. It was very enjoyable to write this type of book because you can make things happen with "magic" that could not happen in real life so there is a freedom that is not possible in other, less-fantastical fiction. Other types of paranormal - vampires or werewolves - are a little further into fantasy for my own personal preference.
Ho scritto una storia contemporanea ("SPELLSTRUCK" (titolo originale)) che parlava di una madre sola dei giorni nostri, che era anche una strega. Ho ambientato la storia qui nella mia casa del New England. Mi sono divertita molto a scrivere questo genere di libro perchè puoi far capitare le cose con la magia, cose che non potrebbero mai accadere nella vita reale così c'è una libertà che non è possibile trovare in altri generi, meno fantastici. Altri generi paranormali - come vampiri e lupi mannari - sono un pò troppo fantasiosi per i miei gusti personali.

10) Puoi darci qualche anticipazione sul tuo prossimo libro?
Right now I am at work on a contemporary novel which is set in Venice. This book is the dearest to my heart as I have just come through the most difficult but also the most incredible five years of my life. During this period, I had to take time away from my writing, which I missed so very much, because it is so much a part of who I am. I am very excited for this story because I believe that because of the time I took off, my writing has grown and shows a new depth of emotion. This story will only flourish as a result of that. I have had three books published in Italy to date. L'OSPITE MISTERIOSA, DOLCE NELL, and L'EROE DELLE HIGHLANDS. They were all published by Mondadori. As I have written and published a number of books before and even after these ones in English, I would love to see them all published in Italy, of course. I have recently retained the rights to all my previously published books and my agent intends to offer them to foreign publishers in the near future. So I am very hopeful you will see more of my books in Italy.
Attualmente sto lavorando ad un romanzo contemporaneo ambientato a Venezia. Questo libro è a me il più caro in assoluto, dato che sono appena uscita da uno dei più difficili ma anche più incredibili 5 anni della mia vita. Durante questo periodo ho dovuto sospendere la scrittura e mi è mancato molto, perchè è davvero una parte di me e di quello che sono. Sono molto eccitata per questo romanzo perchè credo che per via di questo periodo di pausa, il mio modo di scrivere è maturato e mostra una nuova profondità di emozioni. Questa storia sarà il risultato di tutto ciò. Tre dei miei libri sono stati pubblicati in Italia. "L'OSPITE MISTERIOSA", "DOLCE NELL" e "L'EROE DELLE HIGHLANDS". Sono stati pubblicati tutti dalla Mondadori. Dato che ho scritto e pubblicato altri libri prima e dopo di questi in inglese, mi piacerebbe vederli tutti pubblicati in Italia, sicuramente. Ho di recente ottenuto i diritti di tutti i miei libri precedentemente pubblicati e il mio agente intende offrirli ad editori stranieri nell'immediato futuro. Per questo spero tanto di vedere altri miei libri pubblicati in Italia.

Un'ultima cosa scriveresti una piccola dedica a tutte le tue lettrici italiane?
For Italian readers...(I wish I could write this in Italian myself, but I am still an early student of Italian and so I fear my effort would be filled with errors. Mi dispiace!) So I will write it in English and I ask you to translate it for me... Thank you all for your love and dedication to the stories that both myself and my fellow writers have created.
